Adult Literacy Advocates (ALA) is a Capital Area United Way Community Partner that has provided education programs in the Baton Rouge area since 1966.  ALA provides a variety of classes to help our students achieve personal, work and family goals by improving their literacy skills.  As a community group, we also seek to increase economic development and the overall quality of life in Greater Baton Rouge through helping others further their education to become more productive, qualified workers, neighbors, friends and family who can contribute to our community, state, and nation.

From Our Clients

“Finding ALA was a must.  I had become frantic thinking it was too late for me.  I have a future now.   Life is so much brighter.  I’m learning – who would have thought!  I’m not just sliding along, not just coming in through the back door, but really learning.  ALA not only teaches us about knowledge, but self-worth also.      Now I wake up knowing that I’m going somewhere and that I have a lot to give of myself.”

Sacagawea
Sacagawea, the Shoshone woman on the Lewis & Clark expedition, was vital for her translation skills, plant knowledge, and peaceful presence, saving crucial journals when a boat capsized and even getting a river named after her.  Sacagawea was born circa 1788 in what is now the state of Idaho, was kidnapped as a child, married a French trapper, traveled with her infant son, and later settled in St. Louis, becoming a significant figure in American history.
